So you’ve written your e-book you’ve formatted it and you turned it into a PDF. Now it’s time to get the book online and make some money.
First of all you need some hosting and a domain name. You can’t actually buy a domain name, you can only lease it, usually on a yearly basis. You have to host that domain name on a web server somewhere so you can upload files to your website and make them available to your potential customers. Web servers are owned by hosting companies, who will make your site available for a monthly fee. There are lots of web hosting companies offering various levels of service and charging very different amounts of money. There are even Companies who will host your website for free! But I don’t recommend them.
If you want to look professional in the marketplace you will need to get some graphics. You’ll need a header and a footer for your webpage and an image of what your book would look like if it were a physical product. Good graphics will help your sales and are worth investing a little money in.
Crucial to your e-book marketing plan must be your own website. A great looking website will pay for itself time and again in increased sales. A professional looking website needn’t be expensive. In fact, the web hosting company I use for my website provides a brilliant website building tool that is easy enough for a novice to use yet produces professional looking results.
If you’re feeling brave, there is an excellent website editor called Nvu (pronounced, N-view) it’s absolutely free, and there are some great online tutorials to show you how to use it. It will take a while to get the hang of it, but ultimately creating your own website from scratch is a very satisfying thing to do.
You will need a sales letter that tells your potential customer all about your e-book. Sales letter writing is a skill that’s easy to try but difficult to master. Top copywriters get paid a fortune to create words that press the emotional buttons that turn readers into customers. The best sales letters tell stories that illustrate how the customer will benefit from buying your e-book. If you want to try writing your own sales letter, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t, start by reading other people sales letters. Find a sales page or sales letter that makes you want to buy, and modify it to suit your e-book. Keep the structure, but change the details. Alternatively, you can hire a low-cost copywriter at elance.com.
You also need to create a thank you page. This is where your customers will arrive after they’ve paid for their e-book. Your thank you page should contain the link that will allow your customer to download your product. The thank you or download page should be simple and give your customer full instructions on how to download and read the E-Book. You might also want to include a link to the latest version of Adobe’s reader software so that anyone who doesn’t already have it installed on their computer will be able to read your e-book easily.
Last but not least, you will need a payment processor. There are really only two online payment processors worth considering when you’re starting out: They are PayPal and Clickbank. PayPal is free to set up, and you can get the payment button on your sales page in about 10 minutes, start to finish. With Clickbank you have to pay a $50 fee to have them process your payments. But one big advantage they have over PayPal is that they will allow your product to be sold by affiliates. They take care of the payment processing and make payments to your affiliates. So you could potentially end up with a large sales force, managed by Clickbank, making money for you 24/7.
Don’t be daunted by the technical stuff. Once you get in there and start getting your hands dirty you’ll find it a lot easier than it sounds!
